Bass Strait, VIC
HMAS J2 was scuttled in Bass Strait off the Mornington Peninsula coast in 1926 after decommissioning from the Royal Australian Navy. The wreck rests on the sand bottom in 27 metres of water with the pressure hull lines, conning tower base and propeller assembly still recognisable. Soft coral and sponge growth has densely covered the metalwork over the decades. Dives are charter-only and require Advanced certification plus Bass Strait surface-condition experience. Protected under the Historic Shipwrecks Act 1976 - no penetration, no removal.
Visibility at HMAS J2 Submarine typically ranges from 10 to 25 metres, though it shifts with swell, wind and recent rainfall. December to April generally offers the best conditions for diving here.
