Bass Strait, VIC
HMAS J5 was the last of the J-class submarines to be scuttled, in 1926 off the Mornington Peninsula coast in Bass Strait. She lies on a sand bottom in approximately 30 metres of water, broadly intact along the pressure-hull line with conning tower and propeller assembly recognisable. The deepest and most exposed of the J-class wrecks, requiring Advanced certification plus deep-dive and Bass Strait experience. Soft coral and sponge growth densely covers the metalwork. Protected under the Historic Shipwrecks Act 1976.
Visibility at HMAS J5 Submarine typically ranges from 10 to 25 metres, though it shifts with swell, wind and recent rainfall. December to April generally offers the best conditions for diving here.
