Mornington Peninsula, VIC
Blairgowrie Pier and the adjacent Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron marina sit on the western shore of the Mornington Peninsula facing into Port Phillip Bay. The pylons and surrounding rubble bottom run 3 to 8 metres deep and host a dense and reliable population of weedy seadragons, with peak numbers spring through autumn. The site is shore-accessible from a car park, well-lit at the marina end, and one of Victoria's most-photographed macro dives. The pylons are encrusted with sponge, ascidian and bryozoan growth supporting octopus, cuttlefish, leatherjackets and decorator crabs. Dive timing is normally on slack water to avoid drift across the marina entrance.
Visibility at Blairgowrie Pier typically ranges from 3 to 10 metres, though it shifts with swell, wind and recent rainfall. Year-round; weedy seadragons most reliable Oct to Apr generally offers the best conditions for diving here.
Right now: approximately 3 m, 98% confidence (updated 22:11 AEST).
