How to read a Viz Check

Green

Good viz

Forecast visibility is strong for the site (typically 8 m or more). Plans a go — pack the camera.

Amber

Workable

Reduced visibility but still divable. Expect a moderate experience and check community reports before committing.

Red

Poor

Conditions are forecast to be poor. Consider a different site, a different day, or call the local shop before leaving.

What "% confidence" means

Higher confidence (above ~80%) means recent diver reports and the weather model agree. Lower confidence flags sparse data or conflicting signals — use it as a rough guide and check community reports.

What feeds the model

Recent swell height and period, wind speed, 48-hour rainfall, tide phase and height, plus diver-submitted visibility reports for the site. Updated hourly.

Common Viz Check questions

What is Viz Check?
Viz Check is ScubaDownUnder's live visibility forecasting tool for Australian dive sites. It blends recent swell, wind, rainfall, and tide data with diver-submitted reports to estimate underwater visibility in metres for the next eight hours.
What do the green, amber and red badges mean?
Green means visibility is forecast to be good for the site (typically 8 m or more). Amber is workable but reduced — expect a moderate dive. Red means conditions are predicted to be poor; consider a different site or another day.
What does the confidence percentage mean?
Confidence reflects how reliable the underlying data is. Higher confidence (above ~80%) means recent diver reports and weather data agree. Lower confidence flags sparse data or conflicting signals — treat the number as a rough guide.
How often does Viz Check update?
The model refreshes hourly using the latest weather and tide observations. Diver reports submitted from a dive site page feed back into the model and tune the prediction for that site straight away.
Which dive sites are covered?
Viz Check currently tracks a curated set of high-traffic Australian dive sites across NSW, VIC, SA, QLD and WA. The full list is shown on this page and grows as we add new sites and validation data.
