Sydney is full of good shore dives, but only one comes with a map laid out on the seabed. At Gordons Bay, a chain of twenty-five concrete drums runs six hundred metres along the floor of a sheltered cove, each one marked with a plaque naming the marine life around it, so a diver can simply follow the links from the shallows out across the reef and back. It is Sydney's only underwater nature trail, and it turns a quiet eastern-suburbs bay into one of the friendliest and most rewarding shore dives in the city, the kind of place where a blue groper is likely to swim up and follow you the whole way round.

Gordons Bay is tucked into the coastline between Coogee and [Clovelly](https://www.scubadownunder.com/dive-sites/clovelly), reachable only on foot along the Eastern Beaches coastal walk, which keeps it quieter than the beaches on either side. The whole cove is an aquatic reserve, protected from fishing, and that protection shows in the confidence of the fish. A small registered fishing-boat haven shares the bay, its boats winched up on the rocks, but the water itself is given over to swimmers, snorkellers and divers. The nature trail was laid to guide divers through the best of the reef and to double as an education tool, and decades on it remains the simplest way to see the bay's marine life without losing your bearings.

The diving is easy and sheltered, which is exactly the point. From the shore entry the trail begins at around two metres and descends gradually to a maximum of about fifteen metres out in the bay, following the chain through rocky reef, sandy channels and a series of ledges and small walls. A full circuit takes around forty minutes at an unhurried pace. The terrain is classic Sydney sandstone reef, with overhangs and gutters that shelter the fish and invertebrate life, broken by patches of sand where different animals live. Because the bay faces away from the prevailing swell and is ringed by headlands, it stays calm and diveable when more exposed sites are blown out.

For an urban shore dive, Gordons Bay is wonderfully alive. The star is the eastern blue groper, the big, inquisitive, electric-blue fish that is something of a mascot for Sydney diving and that will often escort a diver around the bay at arm's length. Wobbegong sharks lie draped across the ledges, moray eels watch from the cracks, and octopus tuck into the reef and change colour as you pass. Out on the sand, flathead and stingarees lie half-buried, while morwong, leatherjackets, wrasse and the occasional boxfish drift over the reef. The rock walls and overhangs are dense with nudibranchs and invertebrates for divers who slow down and look. The aquatic reserve protection means the fish are unusually relaxed and the numbers unusually high for a site this close to the city.

Gordons Bay is one of the most reliable dives in Sydney, sheltered enough to dive in conditions that shut down the open coast. Visibility is generally good and can be excellent, though it drops noticeably after heavy rain, when run-off clouds the water, so the best diving follows a dry, calm spell. Water temperature swings from around 14°C in winter to about 21°C in summer and early autumn, so a 5mm to 7mm wetsuit suits the season. There is little current inside the bay, and the gentle gradient and the guiding chain make navigation simple, which is why the site is such a favourite for new divers, courses and refreshers. It dives well year-round, with summer and autumn offering the warmest, clearest water.

The trail is only the start. Many divers wander off the chain to explore the bay's edges, the deeper reef and the boulder fields, and the site doubles as an excellent snorkel for those who want to stay on the surface. Night dives bring out the octopus and the bay's nocturnal life, and the easy access makes it a popular spot for divers logging frequent, casual dives. As part of the coastal walk, it also sits within an easy day that can take in nearby Clovelly and Coogee, making it as much a part of a Sydney coastal outing as a dive in its own right.

Gordons Bay is the dive that makes Sydney divers out of beginners. A sheltered cove, a chain to follow, a curious blue groper for company and a reef full of life, all a short walk from one of the busiest coastlines in the country. It asks almost nothing of a diver and gives back a great deal, and for many people it is where the habit of looking under the surface first takes hold.

## Site Access and Logistics

Gordons Bay is a shore dive reached only on foot, via the Eastern Beaches coastal walkway between Coogee and Clovelly, with parking at either beach. From the small fishing-boat haven, divers enter off the rocks or ramp, swim out a short way, locate the chain and follow the nature trail across the reef. No boat is needed, and dive shops in the eastern suburbs handle air and gear.

The sheltered, shallow water and the guiding chain make Gordons Bay one of the best beginner and training dives in Sydney, well suited to Open Water divers and snorkellers. Conditions are usually gentle, but divers should avoid the site after heavy rain when visibility drops, watch for the occasional fishing boat near the entry, and treat the aquatic reserve as no-take, leaving the fish and reef undisturbed. A 5mm to 7mm wetsuit suits the water through the year.
