About HMAS J1 Submarine

HMAS J1 was one of six J-class submarines transferred from the Royal Navy to the Royal Australian Navy in 1919. After decommissioning in the early 1920s she was scuttled off Barwon Heads Bluff. The wreck lies on a sand bottom in approximately 28 metres of water, broadly intact with the pressure hull, conning tower and forward torpedo space still recognisable. Dives are charter-only from Queenscliff or Sorrento, weather-window dependent, and require Advanced Open Water plus deep-dive experience. The wreck is protected under the Historic Shipwrecks Act 1976 - no penetration and no removal of material.
