Put an OM System TG camera in a housing and the photos improve immediately. Add a strobe and they change completely. Until now, that second step has usually meant carrying another battery type, another charger and a light that is much bigger than the camera it serves. Sea&Sea's YS-D12S CUBee, announced in September 2026, is built to remove that friction. It is a palm-sized strobe that runs on the same battery as TG-series cameras and talks to them using OM System's RC flash protocol.
The target buyer is the diver who already owns a TG compact (SDU's SeaFrogs TG-7 housing review covers one popular way in) and wants to move past the flat, blue-green look of built-in flash shots. That covers a lot of Australian divers shooting nudibranchs at Nelson Bay, seahorses in Sydney Harbour or reef macro on a Coral Sea liveaboard. Timing has slipped, though: Sea&Sea's own product page now lists it as available in early December 2026, later than the late-October shipping date first reported.
One Battery for Camera and Strobe
The headline feature is power. The CUBee uses the OM System LI-92B lithium-ion battery, the same cell that powers TG-series cameras, and Sea&Sea says it works with OM System's genuine UC-92 charger. One charger and one set of spares can therefore run the whole system. The strobe cannot charge its own battery, so the external charger is essential. Sea&Sea rates it at 400 flashes per charge with a three-second recycle time. Real-world shot counts will depend on power settings, so heavy shooters should carry a spare.
RC Triggering With TG Cameras
The CUBee connects to the camera by fibre-optic cable and has two modes: RC and manual. In RC mode, which is selected on both the TG camera and the strobe, the camera regulates the strobe's output using OM System's RC flash signals. Sea&Sea pitches this as a way to avoid complicated settings, and says it is the only strobe brand officially certified by OM System for RC compatibility. For newer underwater photographers it means fewer things to adjust while a pygmy pipehorse is drifting out of frame. Manual mode is there for shooters who prefer to set power themselves.
A rear colour LCD shows the current settings and menus, and it rotates in 90-degree steps to suit the angle of the arm.
Light Output and Coverage
Output is rated at 12 Ws with a colour temperature of 5500K. The included Diffuser S, fitted from the factory, gives coverage of 100 x 110 degrees, against 50 x 105 degrees without it. That is a modest output figure, designed for close-focus and macro work, where the subject is a hand-span from the port and a small strobe can light it fully. It isn't designed to light a whole bommie or a wreck section from two metres away. Divers who want reef-scene wide-angle colour will eventually need something more powerful. Sea&Sea also lists an optional Snoot S for tighter macro lighting.
Size, Build and Mounting
The body measures 65 x 60 x 77 mm and is made of polycarbonate resin. Sea&Sea's specification table gives 242 g on land without the battery and -7 g in water with the battery fitted, while its own feature text and DivePhotoGuide quote about 1 g in water. Either way it sits close to neutral and shouldn't drag a small TG rig up or down. It is rated to 60 m and comes in yellow, red or grey.
Sea&Sea includes a YS base, a ball base and an action cam base, so it can mount on a standard arm system or a smaller tray, along with a protector, silicone grease and hex wrenches. The battery is not in that list: Sea&Sea sells the strobe on its own and as a set with battery and charger.

Drawbacks
- Limited power. At 12 Ws, the CUBee is built for macro and close-focus. Wide-angle reef scenes and murky temperate water at distance will stretch it. - RC convenience is OM System specific. Automatic RC control relies on OM System's RC flash protocol and is designed around TG cameras. Owners of other camera brands should expect to work in manual mode. - Budget for batteries and a charger. The battery isn't in the standard accessory list and the strobe can't charge it. Sharing the LI-92B also means camera and strobe draw on the same pool of spares, so carry more than one. - Pricing and supply unclear. Sea&Sea hasn't published a price, its stated availability has moved from late October to early December, and no Australian stockist was confirmed at the time of writing.
Verdict
The CUBee solves a real, specific problem: getting TG shooters onto an external strobe without a second charging system or a steep learning curve. For macro-focused divers with a TG camera, especially those who travel, it looks like one of the simplest upgrades available once stock arrives. Photographers who want to shoot wide, use a mirrorless system or plan to move to two powerful strobes later should skip it and put the money towards a larger unit.
